Selecting and playing music from e.g. records in mostly public places
Disc jockeys select music from records (vinyl), CDs, USB sticks, or music portals and play it, for example, in a venue, at a party, on a radio show, or warm up an audience before a concert or other show. Producing DJs are musicians who create their own danceable music, often with guest vocalists. Typically, DJs mix the music to the beat, so there are no breaks between songs, and use a mixer and various devices to control the software (music).
The field of work of DJs is a wide one. There are pop DJs for rather smaller and private events, event DJs for larger, mostly public events, DJs who play a certain style of music and thus give a musical framework to corresponding events in clubs, bars, concert halls or at festivals, such as techno, house or hip-hop parties or sports or dance sport events. In the beginning, radio DJs played the music themselves, whereas nowadays it is common for presenters to make the announcements and for a technician to play the music.
As a DJ, you have to have a very good sense of rhythm and a feeling for how to mix music together in the best possible way. The profession requires some technical skills to operate all the equipment such as mixers and equalizers, as well as some knowledge of sound engineering to create a good sound. Technology has evolved in recent decades from playing analog music on turntables to digital tabletop CD players to fully digital mp3 devices and laptops. No special training is required, but becoming a good DJ takes a lot of practice, and to become successful you need to find your style and your audience.
