Dancer, trained in jazz ballet
Jazz dancers are dancers who are trained in jazz ballet and have mastered its technique. Jazz ballet is an original American stage dance style based on the aphrodisiac dance of black culture combined with ballet techniques. The dance style is often used in musicals, shows, television and music videos. Some well-known techniques of jazz dance are the Mattox, Graham and Dunham techniques.
Since jazz technique is partly based on classical ballet, most professional jazz dancers have many years of classical training as a foundation. In addition, it is beneficial for jazz dancers to have danced many other dance techniques and learned different jazz styles to become truly versatile. To become a good jazz dancer, in addition to strength and technique, one must be able to convey an emotion, a message with powerful charisma and high intensity. In most dance and musical theater schools, jazz dance is a core subject in the curriculum.
